There is also an “Ask A Question” section, which is perfect for those who are having trouble finding a particular answer. If you want to keep S mode, you will have to get another device to use Design Space. If you turn S mode off, you can only get it back by resetting your device to factory settings (i.e., you can’t just turn it back on).

In other words, some developers will not build on a plot of land because it will cost toomuch money to level the ground and create a sturdy foundation. Barndominiums are excellent choices for families who want a quick build and an energy-efficient home. Sincebarndominiums are made of metal walls, they are easy to insulate. This alternate design makes this home stand out andtakes advantage of the added space the porte-cochere utilizes in the front of the house.

Covington Cottage, Plan #1010

In 2020, developers built over 900,000 single-family homes in the US. This is lower than previous years, putting the annual number of new builds in the million-plus range. Larger Ranch homes usually fall between 2,000 to 3,000 square feet for those needing more space. These homes have three to four bedrooms, two or more bathrooms, and larger living areas. When considering one-story plans, live style is a major consideration. Families with young children may appreciate the lack of stairs in those early years, similarly for couples looking for their forever home where they plan to age in place.

Most house plans today are built using a traditionally styled design. Especially in housingdevelopments, homes use the same style or only incorporate slight variations. A one-story house is commonly referred to as a single-level or ranch home. These homes typically have a single level, with no stairs or decks within the living space, and are often built on small lots due to their modest footprints. This open-concept plan from architect John Tee, makes the most of its natural light-filled square footage and expansive rear covered porch.

What are the benefits of one story house floor plans?

These floor plans offer greater design flexibility and can be easily modified for future needs. These single story house plans come in different architectural styles, shapes and sizes. Experience contemporary living in a single level with 1-story modern house plans that embody sleek design and functional elegance.

Without being stingy when it comes to details, this skillfully designed, single-story cottage offers full-scale living. The generous primary suite wing provides plenty of privacy with the second and third bedrooms on the rear-entry side of the house. For a truly timeless home, the house plan even includes a formal dining room and back porch with a brick fireplace for year-round outdoor living.

They are also easier to maintain over the years, as all of the exterior can be reached with a regular ladder for cleaning, removing leaves from gutters, etc. This unique style is circumstantial depending on the size of the lot and the city’s building ordinances. Before investing in this one-story home, make sureyou can legally build this home. There are a few ways to build an elevated foundation, but the most common methods are wood pilings orconcrete pilings. You’ll need high-quality building materials to successfully create an elevated foundation aspart of your house plan.

Bedrooms & Baths

Dormer windows on the mansard-style roof provide interest for the front facade while a wide front porch welcomes you into this country-style rancher. Inside, the foyer opens up to the family room and traditional dining room. One story house designs, which do not have stairs, are more accessible and suitable for people who are going to age in place or have limited mobility. These homes usually have a large footprint that allows the whole living space to be on a single level. Whether you're looking for a cozy country home, a trendy New American house, or a grand and luxurious estate, there are house plans available to suit your unique style and preferences. While there are different types of Victorian home designs, there are architectural details in the structure thatclassify a building as Victorian.

Shop by Square Footage

one story house plans

Ranch-style homes typically offer an expansive, single-story layout, with sizes commonly ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet. As stated above, the average Ranch house plan is between the 1,500 to 1,700 square foot range, generally offering two to three bedrooms and one to two bathrooms. This size often works well for individuals, couples, or small families. The cost of building Ranch style house plans can be higher than other styles of homes due to several factors.

Construction Features

For comprehensive knowledge of heating and cooling systems, it is essential to consult with your designer. A front view lot is an excellent unique feature because you can take advantage of a large outdoor seating areaand beautiful views. Some lots favor entertainment and outdoor seating at the front of the house. You might want a front-viewingspace because of the location, environment, or simply personal preference. One of the most common ways to build a unique house is to select a style that contrasts with the surroundingneighborhood. With their sleek design, barndominiums bring back nostalgic memories of early America whileproviding modern amenities and style.

The welcoming family room off the front entry flows into a U-shaped kitchen with an attached dining space with double doors that lead to the wide back porch. All ranches are one-story homes, and almost all one-story homes can fit under the ranch category, too. Depending on your one-story house plans, installing an elevator may be more valuable than you realize. As you design your home gym in your one-story home, think about the floors and walls. You can selecthardwood floors, mirrored walls, vaulted ceilings, and reinforced walls for fitted workout equipment.

Similar tothe library, the home gym’s location within the house plans is entirely flexible. Victorian-style house plans are an excellent choice for homeowners looking to stay traditional in style with atouch of elegance. This home creates a picture-perfect, cozy environment for holidays and gatherings.

Many one story house plans include patios, decks, or courtyards to promote an easy transition from indoor to outside living areas. You can use unique floor plans with features like an elevated foundation, porte-cochere, or a sun deck. Youcan style your homes like a barndominium, beach house, or Victorian home. And, finally, you can includeamenities like a library, home gym, or elevator. Unique homes have floor plans and specific features that differentiate a property from the other homes in yourneighborhood.

While available in nearly any architectural style, there are styles that are more commonly found with one-story home designs. Ranch is an iconic American house style with a defining characteristic being the floor plan is spread across 1 level. Ranch house plans, like Prairie and Farmhouse, have seen a recent modernization with the use of metal shed roofs or an increase use of glass throughout the home.

MSC Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of MSC Cruises

msc cruise line reviews

Food in the buffet is varied and tasty, but it can also become repetitive after a week, and the space is frequently crowded and confusing to navigate. Crew members were friendly, my cabin was comfortable, and the daily activity options were plentiful, varied and fun. At night, most shows fell into the "excellent" category, and the food in every extra-fee restaurant and the Yacht Club was phenomenal.

Departure Ports

Given that the vessel, MSC Meraviglia, is the fifth-largest in the line's fleet of two dozen ships in terms of tonnage and the sixth-largest by passenger capacity, the ship's presence in the Big Apple is a big deal. As one colleague astutely pointed out, when it's docked there, it's the largest hotel in the city. MSC Cruises might not be the most well-known brand in the industry, but it is still one of the biggest cruise lines, with plans to expand even more. Keep an eye out for plenty of new MSC ships over the next decade. On select cruises, you can experience a specialty excursion inspired by Martha Stewart.

Compare Cruise Lines

It was another 10 minutes until our waiter took our food order, and not once did anyone ask us if we'd like something other than water to drink. When my travel companion finally requested a beer, the waiter's response was, "Be patient, sir." My jaw dropped. My butler, Meri, went above and beyond to help me make spa and specialty restaurant reservations, and she met us each evening to escort us to dinner and to the theater, where reserved Yacht Club seating was waiting. She did her job superbly, but I generally like to do things for myself. Having someone else handling the minutia felt frivolous and unnecessary; it took a few days for me to acclimate. There were two, one with a bar to hang clothes and another with cubbies for shoes, intimates and the cabin safe.

Extremely poor customer service

The area was home to a pool, a hot tub, tons of seating, solarium access and a daily outdoor buffet at the Yacht Club Grill. Although the food looked tasty, it was, unfortunately, often surrounded by flies. Specialty coffee from the onboard chocolate shop also isn't included with the packages, nor are coffees on private island Ocean Cay, which leads me to my next head-scratcher. I had the single best coffee drink of my life when we called on Ocean Cay.

MSC Cruises is a family-oriented cruise line that was founded in 1960 in Naples, Italy. The company is now one of the largest cruise lines in the world, with a fleet of 23 ships that sail to destinations around the globe. MSC Cruises offers a wide range of itineraries, from short Caribbean cruises to transatlantic voyages and longer world cruises. There's a Sports Bar in the ship's Sportplex, but I never saw it open, even when the area was crowded. Three bars (Atmosphere Bar North, Atmosphere Bar South and Bamboo Bar) by the main Atmosphere Pool serve up classic umbrella drinks, as well as beer and other libations. You'll also find bars in the Marketplace Buffet, on the Yacht Club sun deck and in the Yacht Club Top Sail Lounge.

Complimentary Dining

When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Another free entertainment option worth mentioning is daytime street theater that includes contortionists, roving musicians, magic workshops and flash mob-style performances by the onboard singers and dancers. If you happen to be passing through the promenade area when a flash mob happens, you're likely to see a punk rock-themed song-and-dance routine or, perhaps, one where the cast is dressed up like flowers, insects and birds.

During these shows, themed scenes — including deck plans for the muster drill, dinosaurs and volcanos during the "Jurassic" dome show and even famous ceilings — appear overhead. They're the metaphorical heartbeat of the ship, and you can't help but stop to watch. This bonus value is an estimated valuation calculated by UP after analyzing redemption options, transfer partners, award availability and how much UP would pay to buy these points.

MSC Seaside is beautiful ship and I…

Non-steak mains consist of roasted chicken, scallops Benedict, halibut and sockeye salmon. Kaito also has a separate sushi bar with an a la carte selection of sushi, sashimi, nigiri, tataki, yakitori and other items, including combo platters and desserts. You can pay a la carte if you're in the mood for something light or go with the all-you-can-eat option if you've worked up a serious appetite. It comes out hot and fresh, and it's available by the slice in several types from two separate counters in the buffet. There's at least one bar in every public space, so you won't have to go far to whet your whistle. Overall, I found my Yacht Club experience to be a great way to escape when other areas of the ship felt overwhelming, which they often did.

If everyone is going to the same place at the same time, why not do the muster drill in person? On the flip side, if you're going to make people watch a video instead of doing a live demonstration, why make everyone go to their stations simultaneously? The process creates a chaotic environment where, in my case, people were required to walk into the theater, do a lap around it (for reasons nobody ever actually explained) and immediately exit again.

msc cruise line reviews

I did find the closets' location in a small enclave that led to the bathroom a bit awkward. The room was furnished with a king-size bed that converts into two twins on request, a couch and a desk/vanity area. It featured a closet and cabinet space for storage and an en suite bathroom. "You mean I can't take this out to my kid?" the guy asked in shock. The crew member told him he would have to go to the pool, get his son, bring him inside and have him pick out the dessert, which he grudgingly did. The feeling of overcrowding was exacerbated by service inconveniences like long waits for drinks, meals and elevators.

Finally, MSC has "Experience" packages you can apply to your reservation. There are plenty of opportunities to make new friends from all over the world, with anywhere from 50 percent and up of your fellow passengers from outside of North America. You must be 21 to consume alcohol on MSC Meraviglia's sailings from the U.S. Be warned that plans are tied to specific devices, and you cannot switch between them.

Read all about the outstanding on board experience through the direct cruise reviews sent by guests who have previously cruised with us. MSC Cruises is offering monumental savings on sailings to warm weather destinations starting at less than $200 per person. Personal loans are a type of borrowing where you can get money from a bank, credit union, or online lender and pay it back over time with interest. With daily news stories of delayed and canceled flights, lost baggage, and travelers stranded overseas in the middle of a natural disaster, it's ... Norwegian Dawn, the smallest of the fleet sailing in Europe this summer at 92,250 gross tons, will also spend its summer in Northern Europe.

Some areas lead to dead ends, while others force you to enter busy areas — like the massive Marketplace Buffet — to find stairs to go up or down a deck. In several bars and lounges in the main atrium, tables and chairs are scattered so close to the main staircase that it's difficult for two-way passenger traffic to move through the space. Drink packages must be purchased for the duration of your cruise. If 1 person buys a drink package, everyone else in that stateroom also needs to purchase a package.

This afternoon cruise Eastern Passage and Blake Channel, narrow waterways on the backside of Wrangell island where other ships rarely venture. One of two new ships expressly built for polar waters, National Geographic Resolution is named to honor the second voyage of the legendary Captain James Cook. A fully-stabilized vessel with ice class PC5, Category A, she will enable adventurous guests to go where few have or can.

Review: Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess

national geographic alaska cruise

I followed my advice, knowing we had very few ports of call and that catching up to National Geographic Venture would be near impossible. No matter how often I have explored the Last Frontier, I am ready to return. What could be more interesting than exploring the Inside Passage of Alaska and British Columbia with Lindblad Expeditions? Lindblad partners with National Geographic to immerse guests in this wondrous area. Back on the ship, the National Geographic photographer helped select my best pictures and gave me advice to improve my shooting. He also suggested cropping some of my photos to eliminate a distracting background and draw a viewer's eyes to the subject more easily.

From expedition leaders to naturalists, most hold advanced degrees and are established authorities in their fields. Some join a few expeditions each year to explore the same sites, some of them spending some time in the field away from rigorous academic work. And others lead expeditions all around the world—with many guests saying, “Where you’re going, we’re going,” and returning time after time to travel with them. Browse our team directory to discover the full cast of expedition staff. Enjoy active exploration amid a dramatic scenery of mountains, fjords, rivers and glaciers along the Inside Passage of Alaska and British Columbia.

Special Offers

But if money were no object, I wouldn't hesitate to take another Lindblad Expeditions - National Geographic cruise to explore a new destination, like Portugal or Iceland. While seeing the glaciers felt magical, I was also left with a sense of sadness knowing that I might never see these ice structures in the same way, as glaciers are rapidly receding as a result of climate change. The Dawes glacier, which we visited on the Zodiacs, has retreated 3.8 kilometers since 1985, at a rate of 105 meters per year, according to the American Geophysical Union. The Mendenhall Glacier, which we visited in Juneau, has receded 800 feet just between 2021 and 2022, according to Juneau's KTOO News.

Take advantage of spectacular photographic opportunities, practicing tricks and tips from a certified photo instructor. The experienced captain reads the ice and bring the ship as close as possible to the glacier. Set out by expedition landing craft to navigate among these surreal floating sculptures. Navigate the stunning Wrangell Narrows, an area inaccessible to larger ships, and then cruise into the Sumner Strait, keeping watch for humpback whales surfacing and sea otters gliding through the clear water around our ship.

National Geographic Quest Deck Plan

Her design innovations were informed by 50+ years of expedition expertise to ensure extraordinary discoveries. National Geographic Quest was purpose-built to explore the Americas, her design and engineering informed by our nearly 40 years of experience in these regions. See the world from a new perspective with a veteran expedition team by your side and leading the way. Venture would stop or change course to allow further exploration of a natural phenomenon or in search of certain wildlife. Leaving Seattle, we headed to the San Juan Islands, a popular spot for orcas.

national geographic alaska cruise

Led by our Expedition Team of naturalists and experts, learn all about the nature and wildlife we encounter. Learn about the living indigenous culture of the region from the Kwakwaka'wakw people; explore the charming provincial capital of Victoria; and sail the waters where orcas gather to hunt in Johnstone Strait. In terms of other Alaska cruises, there are more frugal ways to plan a trip, and you can find cheaper rates on routes in the Sitka region with carriers like Carnival, as of May 2023. However, if you're willing to splurge, I think the wildlife excursions, nature experiences, and connection with naturalists and National Geographic experts are worth the price. There were four naturalists on my cruise, with specialties ranging from geology to undersea studies, as well as one National Geographic photographer.

Later, kayaking was canceled due to the winds, but we took out on the zodiacs to explore the area. Our competent guide and birder pointed out different types of birds and spotted an eagle high in a tree. We learned about the area’s geology before returning to the ship for lunch. The lounge functioned as a window on wildlife, with glass enclosing much of the space. From the lounge, guests could head out to the bow to get an unobstructed view of the surroundings, whether on land or sea. Being a small ship, NatGeo Venture contains few public spaces besides the dining room, a lounge, and an outdoor deck.

We really enjoyed the naturalists and  programs, though didn’t attend all that was offered as it would have been more than we wanted. Some days were a little slow for the kids, but they managed as there were a few other children on board. The seas became rougher, and the captain moved the ship to a more protected area. We later set out again in the zodiacs and hiked around another part of Sucia with our octopus expert guide, explaining the local nature along the way. Each day, we disembarked the ship and boarded smaller boats called Zodiacs, which were inflatable vessels about the size of life rafts and used for expeditions.

We ventured into inlets, searched for sea life, and hoped for calving glaciers. We saw bears, moose, whales, sea lions, porpoises, puffins, and a variety of birds. Breakfast came as a buffet with a special dish usually offered each morning. New small ship cruises, adventure trips, ships & the best deals at your fingertips. This 14-day itinerary between Seattle, Washington, and Sitka, Alaska, is an educational voyage aboard 100-guest sister ships National Geographic Quest or Venture.

Explore the coast by kayak or expedition landing craft and go ashore to trace bear trails through forests intersected by crystalline salmon streams and learn about the rain forest ecosystem from naturalist guides. Fix binoculars on the banks to spot Sitka black-tailed deer and moose, as well as black bears, wolves and bald eagles that frequent the shoreline in search of plentiful salmon. Navigate the stunning Wrangell Narrows, an area inaccessible to larger ships, and then cruise into the Sumner Strait, keeping watch for humpback whales surfacing and sea otters gliding through the clear water around the ship.

The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique. Gratuities for all departures of National Geographic Explorer, Orion, Endurance, Resolution, Sea Cloud, Jahan and Lord of the Glens. More than simply recreational travel, Lindblad is known for its emphasis on natural history. Topics of onboard presentations ranged from the impact of climate change on Alaska to insight into whale behaviors and wildlife photography tips. Zodiacs dropped into the frigid water and Venture’s 61 guests were invited to spend the morning navigating the dramatic landscape. Any disappointment from not being able to reach the face of the glacier quickly evaporated, thanks to what naturalists described as an unheard of parade of “charismatic megafauna,” or wildlife.

How the Wreck of the Costa Concordia Changed an Italian Island The New York Times

concordia cruise

Whether or not Captain Francesco Schettino was trying to impress his girlfriend is debatable. The wreck was not the fault of unexpected weather or ship malfunction—it was a disaster caused entirely by a series of human errors. When the Costa Concordia succumbed to the sea, it represented a Concordia cruise disaster and raised immediate environmental concerns the Costa Concordia area had to contend with. The marine sanctuary, which could have suffered irreversible damage due to the cruise liner sinking in 2012, desperately needed protective measures. The salvage operations Concordia undertook were a race against time to minimize the ecological footprint of the wreckage.

grounding and partial sinking

The vessel was on the edge of an underwater cliff, leading to worries that the ship might slip and break apart, causing an oil spill. To lessen any potential damage, oil booms were placed around the wreckage, and in February 2012 salvage workers began removing more than 2,000 tons of fuel; the undertaking was completed the following month. Through the confusion, the captain somehow made it into a lifeboat before everyone else had made it off.

Once Costa Concordia was upright, it needed to be raised up out of the water and refloated to be towed to a scrapyard. Five others, including two bridge officers and the ship’s hotel director, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and negligence in July. Captain Francesco Schettino has been charged with multiple counts of manslaughter and causing the wreck. The so-called parbuckling operation, in which the ship was painstakingly rotated upright, took longer than the hours initially estimated, but engineers said the project had gone exceptionally smoothly. Before this could happen, though, the ship had to be stabilized to prevent any further sinking or slipping. Moreover the "false bottom," that the ship would rest on after being brought to a vertical position had to be prepared.

Launching of Italy’s Largest Cruise Liner

Submerged in the Mediterranean’s depths, the vessel no longer traverses the world’s waters but has embarked on an eternal, anchored existence. The Costa Concordia shipwreck, challenging as it was, brought together numerous stakeholders, from environmentalists to engineers, all dedicated to mitigating its impact. Introducing oil booms and proactive fuel extraction efforts displayed an unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. Her maiden voyage in July 2006 foreshadowed what was meant to be a long-standing Mediterranean staple.

The work done by salvage teams was not just a technical achievement but a concerted effort to preserve a vulnerable ecosystem that had the misfortune of being the stage for this tragedy. As the wake of the Costa Concordia tragedy continued to spread, the legal repercussions for those involved were swift and significant, signaling a new chapter of accountability following the maritime disaster. The latest news on Costa Concordia reverberated through the corridors of justice as several crew members faced the consequences of that fateful night.

The ship's owner last week estimated the cost of the salvage operation at $795 million "and rising." Thunderstorms and lightning delayed the operation by around two hours, but at around 9 a.m. Local time (3 a.m. ET) Italian officials gave the all clear for the 500-strong team of engineers to begin moving the giant vessel. The daring attempt to pull the shipwrecked ocean liner upright began early Monday.

Costa Concordia’s Ill-fated Evening: A Timeline of Events

For Concordia survivor Georgia Ananias, the COVID-19 infections are just the latest evidence that passenger safety still isn’t a top priority for the cruise ship industry. Passengers aboard the Concordia were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat after the captain steered the ship close too shore in a stunt. He then delayed an evacuation order until it was too late, with lifeboats unable to lower because the ship was listing too heavily. More than a year after it ran aground with 4,252 people aboard, shocking viewers worldwide, the cruise ship Costa Concordia remains wedged on rocks near the Italian island Giglio. Its owner, the Carnival Corporation, is spending $400 million on one of the largest salvage operations ever attempted, the Parbuckling Project.

Crew members underwent extensive training, focusing on their assigned roles and emergency response techniques. It was evident that the prior status quo could no longer stand, with the cruise ship crash Italy event catalyzing change. Reflecting on the Costa Concordia as it stands now, the remnants of the once majestic cruise liner continue to captivate and serve as a poignant emblem of a maritime catastrophe. The Costa Concordia wreck site evokes powerful emotions and is steeped in environmental concerns.

Accidents and incidents

As the maritime community continues to remember the lives lost during the 2012 carnival sinking cruise ship tragedy, the commitment to perpetuating these enhanced cruise safety practices remains unwavering. To this day, the impact of the Costa Concordia disaster reverberates through every drill performed, every check made, and every safety briefing held on cruise ships roaming the seas. Such a colossal event reshaped an industry, and as we move forward, it steadfastly informs a global mission to secure the safety and enjoyment of passengers and crew for generations to come. During his trial, which I followed closely, the Concordia shipwreck captain faced severe backlash for mishandling the situation, culminating in a conviction for manslaughter and causing a maritime disaster. The court of public opinion was no kinder than the Italian legal system; Schettino infamously became emblematic of imprudent leadership at sea. His duties to the passengers and crew bound by trust and safety were, by adjudged accounts, all but neglected.

Approximately 500 international salvage experts collaborated on what would become a historic mission, utilizing advanced underwater platforms and cranes to parry further environmental injury. The Costa Concordia wreck site resonates with a quiet that belies the intense dramas once played out on its decks. What remains is a powerful testament to humanity’s respect for nature in the face of disruptive events.

Captain Schettino claimed that Costa Cruises had instructed him to perform a sail-past salute, which is when a cruise ship makes a special maneuverer by sailing close to land. Costa Cruises, however, confirmed that Captain Schettino did not take the approved route for this display. Once it’s upright, the sponsons will be drained, and additional ones will be attached to the other side. With luck, the liner will be towed into an Italian port, where ship breakers will spend two years turning it into scrap metal, which will be sold. If all goes well, the two-hour parbuckling maneuver will climax months of work by 450 technicians.

Following the removal of the fuel in March 2012, plans were set in place to arrange for the ship to be scrapped, and for two-and-a-half years, Costa Concordia remained off the coast of Italy. In September 2013, a parbuckling procedure brought the ship to an upright position. In a separate trial, five other Costa Cruises employees were convicted on manslaughter and all entered plea bargains to receive sentences of three years or less.
